homespun TA "mods"

     Graham:

If your TA will hold pressure, and has not totally leaked out its
fluid, you can probably get away with denting the bulb to get the
     right protrusion.

I did this on my 1750; it ran fine, and I passed two subsequent smog
checks that way. I removed the TA from the car, almost-boiled it in
a pan of water (I used a meat thermometer to check the water temp),
measured the plunger protrusion when hot, and then lightly tapped with
a small ball peen, re-almost-boiled, and remeasured til I got the
right protrusion. I then installed the TA and set the pump gap, etc.

I know this method is not recommended generally, but it worked fine on
my car, and saved lots of money.
