heater out

Hi again,
I've just removed the heater from the spider, and was wondering, does
anybody have any recommendations of anything else that would be more
convenient to do while this thing is out? Obviously, I took it out for a
reason: tried to replace the output hose and broke the core (damn!), so now
I have to get it welded. 
Incidentally, after I had replaced that hose to the core, besides the leak
on the passenger side, there was a leak somewhere in the engine compartment
(Temp. gauge stayed steady at 180ish), so when I arrived at home I had smoke
coming out of the engine compartment, indicating to me that coolant must
have been getting onto the exhaust. How could this be possible, since no
hoses are on that side? It wasn't gushing all that much coolant.....
