spider questions

I just picked up a new (to me, that is... easy there all you grey market fans)
92 Spider. My first question is this: didn't they all come with a sump guard
well before this year? This one doesn't have it. I assume it may have been
destroyed and removed, but the thing only has 20k miles on it and has led the
life of a  king, so that seems kind of unlikely. I have not yet had the chance
to get under it to see if the cross member is drilled for the installation
holes. Is it possible that it is not and this one never had  the guard?

My second question involves the idle. About every other time it returns to
idle, say at a stop light, it hunts from a couple hundred RPM to 1500 or so
several times before settling in. It comes  very close to stalling. The other
50% of the time it hits 900 or so RPM immediately and idles right on the
money. The inconsistency of the problem confronts me a bit. Any suggestions
for starting points? It runs perfectly otherwise.
