Cam Lobe Centers and Caps

Whoops! Disregard the first post from me on this - fingers quicker than the
brain, which ain't sayin' much...

<From: Robert_A_Brady@domain.elided (Robert A Brady)
<Subject: Cam Lobe Centers and Caps

<Here's a quick question to the experts (Fred et. al.).

<As I write this, it seems ridiculous that the caps would NOT be uniform for
<all the cars. Rather, it seems that the scribes on the CAMS should vary
<according to that cam's lobe centers. Thus, the bozo who put the 10548 cams
<into his gtv thinking that they were at 99.5/99.5, actually timed them at
<85.0/96.0..... which might explain some things.....

I'm no expert, but I've been told...The only accurate way to set the cam
timing is with a dial indicator on the cam follower and an indexed crankshaft
pulley or an accurately scribed original. Distance between original "chisel
punch marks" on cams and bearing caps from start to end of indentations is
about 2 degrees - it's very subjective on how you view these marks.

<So the question is: are the cam caps' scribes put in uniform places? If that
<is true, then the cams would have scribes on them corresponding to their lobe
<centers. If that's true, then the intake and exhaust cams aren't
<interchangeable. Finally, if that's the case, how do you identify an intake
<vs. an exhaust cam.

<Brady, DVARBob OC (recovering idiot)

Can't help on that one but my original and 8L's from Shankle had no markings
differentiating Int. or Exh., suspect it's all in the timing on these mild
cams and that they can be interchanged if properly timed.
