burning too much oil?

I am new to the alfa world (91 164L) and am glad to have found this forum
to present questions to. My quandry is that I see lots of white smoke from
the tailpipe after startup.  This is seen mostly after the car has sat for
2-3 days. However after letting the car sit for about 2 hours, I also saw
smoke from the tailpipe, but much less than if the car sits for several
days. The smoking does go away after a few minutes and is not observable at
all after the car is
suficiently warmed up. I understand that these cars do use oil but the
question is do the rest of you observe this as well or is this an omen for
head/ring work? Any advice or suggeststions would be greatly appreciated.
