Milano VIN number logic

In AD7-207 Bryan Carter asks: "Are the last 4 digits in the Milano VIN the
production number?"

The book says: "From 1988 to the end of production the numbering sequences for
the 75 were common to all models rather than being specific to the various
types."
But then it contradicts itself with the Milano numbers, or seems to, if the
listed numbers are not typos. Anyhow, for the 2.5 liter Milano the 1986 last-
four-numbers run from 0011 to 3111, while for the 1987 three liter Milanos the
last-four-numbers run from 1011 to 1550, which are smack in the middle of the
previous year's 2.5 liter numbers. If you stretch it to a five-digit sequence
the 2.5 liter 1987 Milanos included 53113 to 53300, 50511 to 50899, 25013 to
25028, and 55001 to 55040. I don't think this suggests the sort of simplicity
Brian is looking for.
