GTV 6 Whining Noise (Annoying!)

  A high-pitched whining has appeared underneath my GTV 6. It is directly
proportional to the engine rpm, and does not vary with speed, clutch
(in-out), etc. Only with engine rpm. It seems to be coming from the vicinity
of my flywheel, underneath. If I didn't know any better, I would say it
sounds like someone is holding a thin bamboo reed on the teeth of my
flywheel. Yeah. Now cross that sound with the alternator whine one hears in
poorly-wired automotive sound systems. That's the sound I have.

  The severity varies; sometimes it's worse than others. When it's bad,
though, a slight burning smell can be perceived... What's rubbing? I've been
under the car as far as I can get without a reliable jack (no tools at all
at my apt -- all at my ex-wife's house, like she really needs them!), but I
can't see anything...
