Don't panic! these engines are just about bulletproof if they have been
built right. If the noise is noticeable while accelerating, its almost sure
to be an exhaust leak. It does happen sometimes that a valve shim will jump
out but that's more likely at around 7000 rpm and not a few thousand in 5th
gear. 

To find the noise - get a length of hose or tubing. Stick one end in your
ear - check tube for roaches etc first! - and test the various likely
sources of the noise. You might just wanna check the header nuts for
tightness before you do this - might save a whole lot of fooling around.
