155 V6 alarm problem

Greetings,

Recently acquired a 1996 V6 155 and wondered if anyone out there has found
the cure for this particular problem.

The alarm responds only intermittently to the remote control. Sometimes it
will arm but not disarm, sometimes it won't arm, sometimes it is perfect.
The remote locking is always fine (at least it is since I reassembled the
receiver in the roof which had decided to dis-assemble itself).

Other general points, can anyone recommend a good quality exhaust system?

All ideas gratefully received. Any vital tidbits welcome too.
