164 cannot enter read check engine error code mode

On my way home, my 164LS has check engine light on/off
a few times and for a very short time.  I try to get 
error code according to service manual.  That's pushing 
gas pedal 5 times after turned on the ignition.  
The check engine light doesn't get into display error 
code sequence at all ?
