I think there's another misconception I can clear up from the Electrical
point of view.  There's no such thing as an unregulated alternator
output, unless your regulator is shot.  The way the regulator works is
by starving or feeding the field windings (rotor on an alternator) in
order to make sure the main output (stator + diodes) stays at the
regulated voltage.  Notice where the alternator main output wire goes?
Straight to the battery positive.  What some people are doing with the
relay circuits is taking heavy gauge wire directly from the alternator
output in order to avoid overloading the stock wiring, and to avoid any
voltage drops they might cause.  (See previous post about voltage
drops.)  If you do that, I'd also make sure the relay board had proper
fuses for the new current loading.  There's nothing like an electrical
fire to ruin the value of a nice car.
