164 a/c failure / Ideas, prayers wanted

Sofia coughed up a big hairball tonight...

I have failure 8U on the 164 a/c unit. "open or short between controller
and blower fan" Blew the fuse...looks like a short...

Anyone had this problem? Any tips on how to trace it? 
I have the factory manual.

Funny, if you look through the hole for the glovebox latch, you can see
the pesky little steppers. Aren't they tucked in nice and snug?

Any pearls of wisdom appreciated.
