Cam timing marks

My apologies if this has been covered before when I wasn't
paying attention, but here's a query for all of you folks out there
who've looked at more Alfa engines than I've had hot dinners :

To give the different cam timings called for in the various different
Alfa models, do they vary the  mark-positions on the cam journal
caps, or vary the positions of the marks on the camshafts (relative
to the no.1 lobe) ?   Or both ?
