Poorly performing winshield wipers

My 1983 Spider's windshield wipers cannot compete with the torrential
rains that I get in my town of Houston, Texas. Did later model Spiders
have more powerful, quicker wiping wiper motors? If so, can I upgrade
mine to more modern, powerful motors?
