Smallwood's Giulia TI 7th OA in African rally....

John Smallwood and Howard Paterson are in seventh place overall in
their 1965 Giulia TI after the first day of the 21 day-9,000 mile The
Shield of Africa rally that began Sunday in Cape Town.
According to the bulletin posted on the rally's web site
<www.africanrally.com> the first day's timed events were over 92
kilometers of gravel road out of Cape Town. Porsche 911s lead, with Ford
Escorts (and the Giulia, the only Alfa) challenging. Twenty eight cars
started in the competitive class.
The rally is FIA sanctioned and the competition class is for cars built
before 1971. The route begins and ends in Cape Town and includes
Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
Paterson, an experienced English rally driver, is driving; Smallwood is
navigator.
There has been one fatality, a member of a Canadian team in a 240Z
which collided head on with a service vehicle.
 J. Michael Hemsley has written about Smallwood's rally exploits for the
Alfa Owner. Look at the AROC web site <aroc-usa.org> for Hemsley's story
on the AROC national convention, which included a report on Smallwood's
preparations for this event and a picture of the car.
The rally organizers are providing daily results and bulletins on their
site.
