A more aggressive design certainly. The stepped bonnet was a styling form, meant 
as a false air scoop. John H. may wish to validate this, I have no idea of the
source. Air ducts in the bonnet and there pseudo counterparts were all the rage
during this period, eg Austin Healy, Aston Martin, Ferrari, even the early
(groan) Ford Cortina... 

Quite right too about the rear wheel arches being slightly different.

Eric further points out the designer Giugiaro, who also was responsible for the
first Golf I beleive.  If one has a look at the frontal aspect, those  large
headlights  and their dominance of the  somewhat blunt overall front of the
Golf, bear a striking number of design clues/proportions to the early 105.
