Re: rumble in '69

Does this car still have the 1750 engine?

If so, I may have some bad news. I have a 69 GTV that had/has the exact same
problem. I have replaced the flex joint, universal joints, center bearing and
support - still have/had the problem.

A fellow 1750 owner told me it was the sound of rod bearing failure - I was
skeptical - I then found the diagnosis in print (read this somewhere but can't
remeber where) and started to worry a little - but still ignored the notion of
bearing failure. Sure enough when I was doing a valve shim adjustment I
pulled off the middle intake camshaft bearing cap and found a piece of metal
(likely bearing shell - after inspecting my cam and hearing my story Matt
Jones thought so too - and had a simialr story to share) lodged in the small
recess where the bolt for the cam cover threards into the cap. Like a lathe
the tiny metal shaving carved some nice grooves in my euro cam - it is shot!
I am currently building a replacement engine.

I know of two other 1750 engines owned by Houston AROC club members who both
had the same problem and are currently rebuilding the engines - they
positively confirmed rod bearing failure. The spare 1750 engine I am
rebuilding also had bearing failure and required a .030" grind to fix. Maybe
the 1750 weren't nitrided like 2000 cranks!
