There may be a couple of faults but for what its worth, I had similar
troubles: loose, like real loose, feel to the steering reminiscent of
Toyotas, and odd clicks.Turned out that the top cover of the steering box
had worked loose, and worse still, one of the bolts holding the whole
shebang had sheared off. Great .. not! Fixing it was dead easy - takes only
a few minutes with a 13 mm box wrench, and a ring/open ender for one of the
awkward ones. Creaking ? .. don't know. You guys had a setup using a u/j in
the steering column ... right? The bearing at the top can also develop a
creak.

However, this might not be all that's at fault. Check the idler also -
mounted at the other end of the tie rod from the steering box. A small
amount of play in the bottom bush of this causes major clunks in the
steering.
