dropping oil pan in 164

wondering if anyone (maybe a question fred or richard might answer) knows
if it's possible or maybe standard practice not to remove the tie rods
(at least from the wheel end) when removing the oil pan in a 164.  in
other words, when lower engine work is done, is it
necessary/probable/unlikely that tie rod ends were removed from wheels? 
advice appreciated.
