re: heat shields; V6#283

"The heat shield sandwiched between the catalytic converter and the floor pan
on my '88 spyder veloce is in sad shape. There is very little asbestos?
material left on the shield. I have repaired some of the holes and cracks
with JB weld. Will the shield be effective without the insulating material?
Are replacements available? Has anyone else come up with a fix? I am
concerned that the temperature of the catalytic converter reaches very high
temperatures, and could eventually burn the carpet and insulation material
under my legs. (ouch)"

I don't know if the heat shield on your Spider is like my Alfetta's, but it
mine pretty plain, with very few curves, etc. I am thinking it might be
possible to fabricate one from a couple of sheets of aluminium, with (and this
is where I am guessing) a glass fiber sandwich material. NO asbestos at all
to worry about. I haven't a clue as to how thick your heat shield is, because
mine is not a sandwich at all, just a formed piece of (thick) sheet aluminum.

Just a thought, as I know fiberglass is an insulator, and that is what you are
looking for in this app.

Happy hunting
