variable cam

This may have been discussed in the past, but not in the past 5 months that I
have been subscibing to the digest.  I would like to know what the variable
camshaft device on the Bosch Spiders actually does.  How does it compare to
the variable cam and timing technology of current vehicles (Honda VTEC)?  Is
the Alfa device primarily for emissions or performance?  Any information on
this is greatly appreciated.
