First, try the old "double-nut" technique.  Run one nut partially down the
stud.  Run a second nut down the stud to the first one.  While holding the
lower nut with a wrench, tighten the upper nut so that the two nuts jam
together.  Now, back the stud out by turning the LOWER nut.

After that fails (actually, it often works), you can use a pipe wrench on
the offending stud, if you have enough room.  Also, don't forget to apply a
liberal dose of good penetrating oil to the stud before you start.  In
fact, apply the oil, and then go read the Times for a while.
