[alfa] Re Can 10.1 pistons be ID w/head on?

 Kevin Trent asked

> Is there a way to verify 10.1 pistons are really in
there with without disassembling the engine? Can they be identified by
looking through sparkplug hole? Engine is out of car.<

Yes. The 9:1, 10:1 and 10.4 :1 pistons have different crown heights. The
10:1 Motronic is lower than the standard 9:1 and the 10.4:1 is higher than
the 9:1. The differences are great enough that they are easily recognized.
With #1 piston at TDC use a depth gauge to measure from the top of the plug
hole to the top of the piston. Compare your new engine with one of your
others. Any cheap dial caliper should have a built in depth gauge that will
work fine.
