Jay.

In a word, Hylomar. It never hardens, will prevent dissimilar metal
corrosion and is available at every auto supply store. A thin smear is
all that will be necessary, if any. Remember, any thickness of material
added between the flange and housing will change the mesh between the
ring (crown wheel for you Brits) and pinion.
