Many thanks to Gil -- a new brake light switch was the answer!

Check the brake light switch operated by a tab on the brake pedal under the dash. Pull one of the wires off the switch and if the brake lights go off, then the switch is bad. As you remove the bad switch you will see how to adjust the new switch for proper operation.
