Re: [alfa] Only a matter of time... (ka-thunk)

Hi Andy:

Driveline problems can be tough to track down, but there's a lot more to look at besides the giubo. Also look at the center support, and the U-joints. The center support should have its rubber in good condition, and just a little free play when you try to move the driveshaft manually in each direction. Loose U-joints can usually only be felt with the driveshaft free of the car.

As for your rear brakes, the pressure compensator (that device under the floor, forward of the axle), may have failed. Earlier this year, I had the same symptoms on my '74 Spider, and had to replace the compensator. IAP didn't supply me the correct part, so find a used one, as I did, or try another vendor. If both brakes are overheated, I'd bet against a bearing problem.

... before something else goes wrong. The motor is top notch, but now
there is a new and disturbing noise from under the car. When driving
away in first gear, there is a very low pitch rumble and vibration that
stops once up to 2000 rpm. Also, after the shifting of each gear and
during the release of the clutch, there is some clunking sounds. Once
at speed, there are no problems. I am guessing clutch, or less likely a
transmission problem. I hoped and prayed that it was just a donut... no
luck. Also, my rear wheels are still getting hot! I've changed all the
brake lines, and the wheels turn with minimal drag. Could this be a
bearing problem??

Thanks for advice and help,
