[alfa] gear work

Digesti,
A typical transmission gear taken from the mainshaft of a spica-era
five-speed is built of two pieces. There is the gear, meshing with the layshaft, and
pressed to it over splines, is the toothed engagement ring. The engagement ring
is similar for all the gears one through five. If the engagement ring teeth,
splined to second gear, exhibit deformation (wear), it seems that a donor could
be scavenged from another gear (I've never seen these engagement rings sold
separately). Has anyone had any luck taking these two pieces apart?
Thanks, Digest.
