[alfa] GTV steering box question

Ed Prytherch is wondering about an unusual steering box (actually the
steering shaft) he's removed from a donor '74 GTV: "...there is no shaft
to the steering wheel. Instead there is a splined stub. This connects to
a U joint and a section of shaft that has splines at the other end. This
connects to another section of shaft just
below the column housing that is below the dashboard. This shaft
connects to the steering wheel."

Ed, when you were removing the steering shaft under the dash, did you
see a way the shaft might be made to move up and down? This could be
accomplished with a lever or quite possibly additional holes where the
retaining bolts go through.

I'm speculating the box was modified by cutting off the hollow shaft and
welding on a short splined solid one. Then from the U joint back it was
sourced from an Alfetta GT. Is the steering wheel end splined or is
notched / keyed? If the former, then am sure it is Alfetta based.

Or - someone will write in and say all 74 GTV's came this way, but doubt
it. I believe the Alfetta was the first Alfa with an up / down
adjustment - though as soon as this hits the "streets" I'm sure I'll
know for sure soon enough.
