I don't think I believe that each timing cover is matched to a particular block, but even if that's true, how would a mismatch change the lower timing chain tension? Or, maybe you meant upper timing chain tension, but there's a lot of adjustability in the tensioner. Really, neither of those scenarios make sense to me. The only problem I might imagine could be an oil leak, either where the sump or head mates with the block and cover, if the pair don't form a true planar surface, and if the cover were too tall, there's surely going to be a major problem with the head gasket sealing around the cylinders and water jackets.

Dan just make sure you use the correct timing cover that matches its
respective block. I believe these where machined together and if you mix
then you can come across problems with the lower timing chain tension.
