[alfa] Spider In Tank Fuel Pump

My "85 Spider starts sputering with an 1/8 of a tank sometimes...sometimes
only when the low fuel warning light comes on.  The light comes on with just
about 0.5 of a gallon remaining.  Finally pulled the pump and bent the float
arm a little  to increase the reserve.  The filter sock on the pump was a
blach plastic mesh flat bag that was quite a mess.  Also found a second filter
of a different style lying in the bottom of the tank.  Perhaps the lost filter
sock sloshing around had been blocking the intake, causing my sputering
problem?  Am now running the in tank pump without any filter sock.  Am I
asking for trouble?  Thanks.
