I made a "tool" out of appropriate diameter plastic pipe fitting + some 
extenders (can send pic if you like - not elegant but it worked a 
treat).  As Andrew says, you can get seal out with puller or screwdriver 
(carefully).  Check surface of crank where seal sits to ensure no 
grove.  If you find wear, consider altering positioning of seal when you 
reinstall or put sleeve on crank ( Speedi-sleeves 
http://www2.chicago-rawhide.com/speedi_sleeves.htm ).
