If you're referring to Speed Bleeders, then yes- they work as advertised.  For
me, the combination of Speed Bleeders, a hose with cup hanging off each
caliper, and the Motive Power brake bleeder that IAP sells is the most
effective way to bleed air out of automotive hydraulics.  And, I verified also
that the bleed screws on my '91 Spider (no PO's) are at the top of the
caliper.  Have your calipers been switched side to side maybe?
