[alfa] Webers vs. Spica
<Webers are fine for racing where you really only need to have the right
jetting at WOT but on a
street car where you want it to idle cold, warm and hot, transition from
idle to light throttle and
then through cruise to high speed it is really a lot of work to get the
correct jet combinations for
all circumstances. If you enjoy tinkering and think its interesting to try
to figure out how to get
rid of the transition flat spot and cool to tune your carburetors every few
weeks or so, then by all
means go with Webers.>
One of the many good reasons for a forum such as this is that you can ask a
question and get lots of help. You can also get differing opinions ... all
based on sound reasoning and/or good experience. Here's my perspective on
Webers. In 1983 I bought a 1967 GTV from the original owner. It was a
little tired, but completely stock, having never been bashed or rebuilt. In
1984, I replaced the 1600 engine with a 1750. I used a stock head on the
new motor, except for Isky heavy duty valve springs and Shankle 8L cams. The
40 DCOE Webers from my original 1600 engine were also used, rejetted by me
after a phone call to Weber's tech support department. (I am a typical
shadetree mechanic, though probably with less skill than many).
I drove the car with the 1750 engine and original Webers several times a
week for 15 years without having to fiddle with the Webers. Because I put
in an electronic ignition, I didn't have to play with timing or plugs much
either. Mid-way through the 15 years, the car was dyno-tuned. It was
pretty much spot on.
Now the car has a pumped 2000cc motor with new Weber DCOE 45's. The 45's
are a little more difficult to get spot on, but that's probably exacerbated
by the hotter cams, higher compression ration, and other goodies on the new
engine ... and by the fact that the engine has only about 100 miles on it.
The rings aren't even fully seated yet.
I had a Spica-injected '71 Spider and it was nice, though a little too
quiet. The GTV has a good stereo, but I rarely play it; the sound of the
Webers is music enough.
