Indeed there was. Alfa issued a recall in early 1981 (#2001/55) to install
in-tank fuel pumps in certain '77, 78 & '79 MY Spiders to solve drivability
issues that occurred under certain operating conditions (read fuel
starvation). It also explains why the pre-pump isn't shown on the '77 & '78
wiring diagrams.
