RE: [alfa] GTV-6 Running out of gas - maybe

Ok, I stand corrected. The bosch injected spiders do have pre-pumps as do
many other cars of this vintage (BMW, Volvo, etc).

I simply assumed that the V6 alfas had them as well.

I will stay after class and write on the blackboard 500 times: "Milanos and
GTV-6's do not have pre-pumps" I'll even clean the erasers too :-)

Sorry for the mis-information,

Jeff

The pre-pump in the tank is probably dead. Car will work fine with a
full
tank of fuel as the main fuel pump does not have to work as hard to suck
the
fuel out. When you get below half a tank or so, the main pump can't suck
the
fuel from the bottom of the tank (although pickup is at the bottom, the
line
comes out through the top of the tank hence the need for the pre-pump to
pump the fuel out through the top to the main pump).

Au contre, mon frere. I don't believe that a fuel pre-pump exists on the
GTV-6 or Milano as both of these are gravity feed systems to the
below-tank mounted high pressure fuel pump. On both of these cars, the
electrical wires on top of the tank are for the fuel level sender; tank
top hose is for vapor. Early fuel injected cars with low mounted tanks
had two pumps; the first, an in-tank 'strong suction - no pressure'
pumped the fuel from the tank and the second outside the tank 'no-suction
but strong pressure' sent it to the injectors with adequate pressure.
Reference Milano factory workshop manual section 4-14 through 17 but
correct me if I'm wrong. I'm from Missouri so you'll have to show me.
