[alfa] Re: 105 rattling shifter

    The older '60's shifters used either one or two ball bearings in the
bottom end of the shifter lever where it clamps onto the transmission.  When
you push the shifter down, the ball bearings push a mechanism in the
transmission and allow you to go into reverse.
    On the later transmissions, ('70's or so) there is a mechanical gate
mechanism in the transmission that keeps you from going from 5th gear directly
into reverse and the ball bearings are no longer needed.  Since you can get
the car into reverse without pushing down on the shifter, it sounds like this
is the system you have.
    I have the same system on my Duetto and had the same rattling problem.  I
took the shifter out, disassembled it as much as possible, cleaned it
completely and inserted RTV into every crack and crevice I could find and
reassembled it and let it set up.
    That made it effectively a one piece unit, disabled the 'push to reverse'
function and got rid of that annoying rattle!

I'm putting a transmission from a 74 GTV into my 67 GTV, but am using the
original shift lever. I've never understood how the reverse lockout mechanism
is meant to work. There's some kind of spring loaded tube under the shift
knob
- - but it barely seems to move, and there's no mechanism emerging at the base
of
the lever to operate anything. If it's meant to be a reverse gear lockout,
then
it doesn't work because the trans. goes into reverse easily without pressing
down on the shift knob etc.
About the only thing it does do is rattle, very annoyingly, a lot of the
time.
I've tried to quieten it with carpet tape and grommets etc but have never got
rid of it completely.
So, 2 questions - how is it meant to work? and how do I shut it up?
