Tyres/Tires

Hi Joe

Michelin actually make 175-14HR in the XAS pattern, this was fitment to UK
Stags from 1977. These are actually made for Franch Citroen DS/ID
enthusiasts !!!!!

I have never managed to convince Michelin to produce a 185-14 XAS/XVS as
they say "not enough volume" and while many Stag owners in the UK fit many
different qualities and sections of tyre, I have to admit Michelin have a
point.

However, the real modern equivalent tyre is Michelin MXV-P in size 185-14.
This tyre is still available although there is apparently some talk that
Michelin are set to discontinue this! The MXV tyre is very grippy indeed
in comparison to XAS/XVS tyres, they are well suited to the car and the
excellent Michelin quality still shines.

Personally I believe the car is best on the standard tyres and this is what
Triumph tested as best before putting the car into production, having also
tried 195/70-14 which at the time they deemed unsatisfactory on the ride
and handling circuit (source Ted Marchant of chassis development) but many
owners have since gone for low profile tyres, say with a '70' profile (XVS
is 82).

In fitting lo profile tyres, be aware that ride quality generally
deteriorates and noise increases in proportion to the 'ratio', also these
relatively stiff carcasses with wide/flat tread areas do not suit the large
camber changes experienced on the Stag front and rear end and may when they
'let go' will do so very suddenly.

Sits back to wait for the flood of e-mails .....................
