According to the Taylor/Jell's 'Triumph Stag - The Complete History' all
commission numbers were prefixed with the letters LD (or  LE for US Federal
models). As Dave says, BW indicates automatic transmission and O indicates
manual with overdrive. Not sure how you just ended with L. I'm sure Glenn
will be offering a nice prize for the person who comes up with the best
explanation for what the letters LD and LE stand for.
