No, It switches immediatley (if you are fast enough) to 3rd if you only release throttle.

Get a reconditioned one.
Also, does anyone know how much to get the box refurbished / replaced if it
is 'knackered'?
Reconditioned ones are available by local autobox companies as well as Rimmer and others (check there web site for price), It will take you a couple of hours to replace it by yourself, but not a dramatic job. The exhaust (front parts) has to go away. Gearbox can be changed with engine still in place.
