I have found that doing this ( in extreme cases ) can cause fouling problems
with the shim cup and underside of the bucket as well as weakening the shim
allowing it to bend/extrude itself away from the valve stem.

I have succesfully surface ground the top of the bucket, ie surface on which
the cam rolls. this leaves the geometry under the bucket as intended and does
not seem to give any other problems. The top of the bucket being pretty thick
to start with.
