As well as being a Stag owner I also ride a Harley Sportster (sucker for
punishment).  The alloy engine on the Harley is coated in a varnish which
cracks giving 'spiders' of corrosion just like alloy wheels.  A favourite
remedy amongst bikers here in the UK is to have the varnish stripped and then
just keep polishing the cases.  Admitedly the cases corrode pretty quickly but
providing they don't get to bad they can always be buffed up.
