thanks for the responses. I have been doing exactly what Bob suggests here, to no avail. I guess I should try Allen's advice about using the hill. Obviously, my intention here is to not have to pull the tranny.

I talked to some old-timers who counseled me to put the
rear up on jackstands, put it in gear, start it up, slam on the brakes
to stall it, then depress the clutch and it should pop free.

If you don't want to take it out in traffic, try this sequence change:

put the rear up on jackstands, put it in gear, start it up,
> depress the clutch <
slam on the brakes to stall it

You may need to repeat a few times.
