[ihc] Ryan's short
Ryan,
A full scale deflection on the ammeter is circa 60A. The memory wire
on your stereo is connected to a line (lighter cct.) that at most will draw
about 10A before it becomes very hot and starts to alert you olfactorily.
Full-scale fluctuations sound like either you got water in the alt, the
brushes and/or trio/regulator are not making good contact, or the small
plastic insulator on the back of the alt. has deteriorated, or the big blue
wire (10GA) is not up to snuff at its connections (bulkhead too), or
something else is drawing something on the order of decades of amps. Also,
don't neglect the fact that the harness to the back of the gauge may be
bad. If the small nuts loosen on the back of the ammeter (am I thinking of
something else), this could cause what you're seeing.
So, there's about 10 things to check there. Look all around, the circuit
isn't that complicated just makes lots of stops in the route.
Keep us posted!
