[ihc] Re: ihc-digest V7 #439

Peter, I had looked at doing this once upon a time. The answer is yes and no. AMC used several input shafts on the same application T-18, according the transmission parts suppliers I talked with. In an effort to use as much existing inventory on new cars and trucks, they used several different adaptors along with several different bellhousingsn depending on what was on the shelf, so it may work, depending on whether you get lucky and get the correct length input shaft along with the correct depth bellhousing (there were 4 that AMC used) along with the correct bellhousing adaptor (mounts between the bellhousing and the transmission). Do not just go out and get the first transmission you find, or the first bellhousing you find, because chances are it will not work unless you did the proper measurements and comparisons. If you have a T-19 already, then maybe you could find a Jeep transmission that still has the bellhousing and adaptor with it, and measure the length of the input shaft to see if it is the same, in which case that bellhousing may fit. Of course you still have to make sure the crank pilot does not stick back further than the engine the transmission came from, else you may bottom out the Jeep input before it is tightened down to the block.
Your post was kind of confusing: are you talking about putting an AMC 360 in a Scout using an IHC T-19? What exactly is it you are proposing?

Subject: [ihc] Manual Transmission Differences T-18 & T-19 for Various Engines &
Transfer Cases

I need a little help and know someone can answer this off the top of their
head.

What are the differences between the T-18 and T-19 transmissions that were
used in Scouts for the 258 I-6, 345, and 192?

What are the differences between the T-19s that have a Dana 20 bolted to the
rear and those that have a single speed transfer case?

Would a Scout with a 192 most likely get a granny low T-19 or a close ration
T-19?

If you are curious I am wondering if I can take a 258 (now 360), AMC bolt
pattern T-18 bell housing, T-18, Dana 20 setup and make a 360, AMC bolt
pattern T-18 bell housing, T-19, Dana 20 setup by using my current set-up in
my '72 and mixing it with parts from a '78 Scout with a 192, T-19, and
single speed transfer case. These are all Scout II parts. Or simply, can I
swap a T-19 for a T-18 and not have to find any additional parts?
