A sharp tug with a pair of plyers will do the trick too. If you have a chrome type knob, just take the knob off, it's much easier. on the later switches, the plastic knob is glued on and the ahft usually pulls out before the knob comes off.....

'cept, I was trying to remove the headlight switch to have handy for a
 >spare.. I think this method might not work so well for that...
