[ihc] 'Keying' a Torque convertor
Matt,
There are two small dado cuts in the engagement of the Torque
Convertor (TC) in the Transmission. These two pegs drive the front pump
from the engine through the TC. If improperly installed, the front pump
drive can become damaged and result in poor pump action, or no pump action
at all. If a drive peg is broken off it might cause a vibration, but I
doubt very much. Sounds like you might have something else wrong.
Have you tried putting the Trans in Neutral at speed to determine if the
vibration is on the input side or output side of the trans? If vibrates in
neutral at speed with engine at idle, then output...
If vibrates in Neutral while revving the engine up to road speed RPM range,
then suspect input side. If a shudder upon acceleration, suspect warped
friction or pressure discs in the trans.

understand what's inside the magic slushbox!

Joel,
It was partially full from when I removed it. I didnt drain it
completely. Nor did I put a load on it prior to running through the shift
pattern and letting it run in neutral for a while. I am not sure what the
keying is you're talking about, but the converter is the only thing I took
off of the tranny prior to hooking it up to the new engine.
I did have to use a helicoil thread repair kit on one of the bolt holes
that
attaches the converter to the flexplate, but I dont think there is a
significant change in the mass at that one point to throw the ballance off
and give me that shimmy. It has to be something more sublime. Besides the
flex plate, what else within a 727 could throw it out of ballance?
