[ihc] Positive ID of OD tranny

>5th gear, the output shaft will actually turn more slowly than the input
>shaft, about 0.68 to 1, with 1 to 1 being 4th.

Close, but the output turns FASTER than the input. Hence the term
"overdrive". The OD ratio is only .823. For one turn of the input shaft,
the output will turn 1.22 turns.

Put the shifter far right and forward. If it is OD, you will get 1.22
turns of the output shaft for one turn of the input. If not an
OD tranny, then the tranny is in 4th gear (see shift patterns below)
and you will get only 0.71 or 0.72 turns of the output. The is
because the 4th gear on a T-35 is 1.41 and on a T-36 it is 1.225.

OD Shift pattern (T-34):
1 2 5
R 3 4
Direct 5th pattern (T-35, T-36):
1 2 4
R 3 5

The modified stick is probably because the long throw means you
need to 'palm' it into 1st gear or you smash your knuckles against
the dash on a pickup or travelall. And reverse puts the knob down
on the seat. Shifting into 2nd and 5th isn't a problem as the throw
is shorter.

I still have my 5 speed page up at
