[ihc] My incredible bad luck and stupidity

As some of you may remember. a few weeks ago I broke a rod cap and
destroyed my block and camshaft.

a list member put me in touch with a guy in Chicago who said he had 4 345's
that came from running Scouts and I could pick one out for $75. I went
down and only one would turn over with a breaker bar on the crank so I took
it thinking Icould just swap my 4 bbl intake and carb and run it.
when I got it home I decided to check it out some before installing, removed
the oil pan (found bearing material turned out to be cam bearings). checked
compression and not much in #8. Pulled heads, badly scored cylinder. I
decided to just rebuild it, I already had recently reconditioned heads, and
almost new 30 over pistons (except for the one destroyed by the broken rod).
I got the bored block with new cam bearings and polished crank back from the
machine shop today. When I installed the first piston it came out of the
block about 7/16 surprise, the motor is a 304. I am kicking myself for not
checking that, I didnt even think about it, just believed the guy when he
said 345.

I guess the only thing to do is put the other 7 pistons on the 304 rods and
find a carburetor.

I am so pissed off at myself right now I don't even want to think about it.

By the way I found out that the torque wrench I used to assemble it the
first time was way off. When it was set at 50 Iwas only getting about 30.
Thats probably why the rod bolt failed the first time.

guess Ill go flog myself now.

Nick
