Re: Holley Pro-Jection

John,
It's nice to hear that your projection installation went well. Mine took
about a month and a half. Most of it was tracking down the problem with
the pressure regulator(it was partially blocked) and waiting for them to
send me a replacement throttle body. I'm also surprised that it started
up for you right out of the box. What is your fuel pressure? I had to
adjust mine way down before I could get my engine to fire up and stay
running. I think I ended up with a fuel pressure of around 15 psi.
My next problem was start up. It took me a while to figure out that my
fast idle solenoid would retract during cranking and didn't bump up the
idle. More cleaning of connections and more dielectric grease seems to
have solved that problem. I'm still having problems with start up along
the same lines as you mentioned. It seems to me that it takes way too
long for the sensors to assess the situation and compensate for engine
temp. I have to use the choke knob on the ECU like an old fashioned choke
and adjust it after a cold start up. Start it rich and then adjust it way
down about 30 seconds later. Warm start up hasn't been too much trouble
for me. It might behave a little erratic for a few seconds but adjusts
pretty quick.
I added the closed loop oxygen sensor a little while ago. Now I have a
new problem. When I come to a stop, after a few seconds, Sometimes the
idle will become rough and the vacuum will start to drop. I didn't have
this problem until I added the oxygen sensor. Looks like I've got some
trouble shooting ahead of me. If you have any suggestions on where to
start feel free to let me know.
It may not sound like it but over all I am happy with the projection so
far. A lot of little bugs to work out but when it runs it runs like a
champ. I too had a tire break loose on my first time around the block and
am very pleased with the performance. The pinging during towing that you
get is it possibly a too lean adjustment of the High RPM knob? The closed
loop system turns off quite easily during hard acceleration and near WOT.
I haven't tried towing yet but that is one of the main reason for getting
the projection system. I live in San Diego at about 400' of elevation.
Heading east out of San Diego is several thousand feet of climb. When I
tow my travel trailer the bog in the higher elevation is really
noticeable. Wheeling in the mountains is way too rich also. Ideally I
would like to install an on off switch for the closed loop and get an
air/fuel gauge and manually adjust when necessary. I added a few more
comments to your letter below. Please let me know if you discover any
useful tips or tricks to make the projection run better. Dialing it in
seems to be an exercise in patience. Especially the TPS.

I used a 2bbl manifold and an adapter plate. I like this set up because
it puts the butterflys over the center of the manifold.

Same location as mine.

Remember the closed loop doesn't start right away. It sounds like your
initial settings are too rich.
