RE: ON-Demand supercharges

## >> The last V8 in Mad Max's Interceptor had a disengageable blower. :)

the "supercharger" used in the car featured in the Mad Max and Road Warrior
movies was a mock-up. it's an older Weiand 671 housing with the guts ripped
out sitting on top of an otherwise-stock Aussie-variant Ford 351 (probably a
C). inside the blower housing sat a standard 4-barrel carburetor on a stock
GT intake. the belt and gears to the front of the blower housing were for
show only.

here's a direct quote from one of the "semi-official" Mad Max websites
(madmaxmovies.com):

"The supercharger was empty and the carburettor sat inside. A small water
pump was attached to the front of the supercharger to hold the drive wheel,
this also moved the supercharger belt forward to clear the standard 351
water pump assembly, and the distributor has a 90 degree elbow to allow it
to clear the supercharger. The supercharger belt is driven by an electric
motor which is hidden by a yellow bucket in the garage scene in MM1. Weiand
never had a supercharger that could be activated and deactivated. Even with
huge compression it would be tough to generate 600bhp on a 351 in 1974
without rebuilding it once every couple of hundred miles"

the car itself is a 1973 XB GT Ford Falcon Coupe, a car exclusive to
Australia (and one neat-looking monster, too). it uses a number of minor
modifications and add-ons, most notable the custom aftermarket front end
(called a Concorde, originally designed as a showpiece, used for this car,
and later made publicly available).

IH content: somewhere out there is a fellow with a really nice maroon Scout
II, powered by a 392. the guy had a custom intake fabricated for a
roots-style supercharger of the 671 type mentioned above. it's a really
awesome looking rig, and the guy (i exchanged e-mails with him a few times
when i found his site) said that it performed really well. this is way out
of my league (for many many reasons) but maybe Tom M would be interested?
